Predestined for Joy: Finding Comfort in a Controversial Doctrine

Shirk, Jonathan L.

Few Biblical doctrines are more polarizing among Christians than predestination and election. How sad. God intends these marvelous doctrines to unite Christians (His beloved children) and to give unwavering comfort, assurance, and joy in their salvation. Many Christians misunderstand the depth and encouragement of predestination and are skeptical about its goodness.

This short and straightforward book may be what helps you find deeper comfort and joy in God’s sovereignty and salvation. Pastor Jonathan Shirk writes in plain language with Biblical fidelity. He unpacks the doctrine of predestination in order to help you better see God’s glory and find increasing comfort and joy in Christ and his saving grace.

Jonathan L. Shirk grew up in Lancaster County, PA where his father pastored a Mennonite Church and preached Calvinistic doctrine (Jonathan is a third generation pastor). His education progressed from Hinkletown Mennonite School to Garden Spot Middle and High School (1997) to a B.S. degree from Grove City College (2001) to a M.Div. degree from Reformed Presbyterian Theological Seminary (2006).

Jonathan spent over seven years in Student Ministry at North Park Church in Wexford, PA, but in 2013, Jonathan moved with his family from Pittsburgh back to Lancaster County for the adventure of church revitalization. He now pastors Jerusalem Church, an independent Reformed church in Manheim, PA, where he devotes himself to shepherding God’s people for the glory of God and their utmost comfort and joy. Proclaiming the law and gospel is his passion.

Jonathan is also the Founder and Content Creator of Small Town Theologian through which he strives to help people find deeper comfort and joy in the gospel from a Reformed perspective through writing short accessible books, producing a brief but theologically robust and thought-provoking podcast which he records in his walk-in closet, and a blog that coincides with his podcast. Familiarize yourself with his work at smalltowntheologian.org and jerusalemchurch.net.

Jonathan loves his wife Kristina and their four children and enjoys running, fly fishing, grilling, hip hop, reading, basketball, and the Steelers.
