For Christians, identity is not defined by a preference or a disposition or a central desire. Identity is rooted in the person and work of Jesus Christ, who calls us to find ourselves in him. Our very lives are found in another person. We "find ourselves" when we lose our life for the sake of Jesus Christ. That view of identity may sound strange to contemporary ears, but it has long been the position of orthodox Christianity.
