This booklet was originally James Henley Thornwell's sermon on John 10:17-18, entitled "The Sacrifice of Christ, the Type and Model of Missionary Effort." Preached by appointment of the Board of Foreign Missions of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America (Old School) on May 18, 1856, Thornwell opens up the cross of Jesus and its implications for the work of missions. Even as Jesus went to the cross for the glory of God, the good of man, as a willing sacrfice, and for the sake of the reward set before Him, so the Christian goes out into the world with the same aims and motivations. A Foreword by Dr. Craig A. Sheppard introduces Thornwell and this sermon to the reader.
