About the Author

Charles Allen Stillman (1819-1895) was born in Charleston, South Carolina. After graduating from Oglethorpe University in 1841, and from Columbia Theological Seminary in 1844, he pastored churches in Eutaw, Alabama, Gainesville, Alabama, and Tuscaloosa, Alabama. He was instrumental in leading the Presbyterian Church in the United States to begin the Institute for Training Colored Ministers at Tuscaloosa in 1875, and served as its Superintendent until his death. The school continues to this day as Stillman College, in memory of its founder.
