Mary, the mother of Jesus; Mary, the sister of Martha and Lazarus; and Mary Magdalene all feature prominently in the gospel narrative. But what can Christians learn from the faith displayed by these women?

• Reflective and vivid portrayals of three remarkable women. Perhaps too often known only at the surface-level, ‘the three Marys’ are brought into sharp focus by Alexander Moody Stuart.

• An in-depth character analysis of these Godly women. In these moving and engaging chapters, the author draws out their characters and helps readers learn from each one’s relationship to Jesus.

• Valuable application for all Christians. This book impresses upon the reader that ‘the three Marys’ have much to teach all believers, men and women, about the faithful Christian life.

Moody Stuart’s preaching and teaching were marked by a keen sensitivity to the human condition and its needs, combined with challenging practical application. This, linked with a deep tenderness and love, well-qualified him to write The Three Marys.

Alexander Moody Stuart was born Alexander Moody at Paisley in June 1809.

He was ordained to his first ministry at St Luke’s, Young Street, in July 1837. After the Disruption of 1843, the congregation joined the Free Church of Scotland. His was a deeply spiritual ministry, and many found a home at Free St Luke's under his pastoral oversight.

His fervent commitment to the Free Church's mission to the Jews was a prominent part of his ministry, as was his defence of the authority of the Bible in days when this was being called into question.

'The author has only to add his request for the reader's prayer for a blessing on these pages; for the gracious covering of all in them that may be of man; for the breathing of the Spirit on whatever is of God; and for the sprinkling of of the whole with that blood of the Lamb, which alone...renders any effort of ours either acceptable to God or profitable to man.'

— Author's Preface to The Three Marys, Edinburgh, March 1863
